Moor Allerton
This place is steeped in the history of the game. Dr. Alistair MacKenzie, creator of Augusta National, did the original design before the Moor Allerton committee decided to up sticks and move to a new site a few miles away on the edge of the small village of Wike. Set in 220 acres of undulating Yorkshire countryside, the new Fulford Heath was designed by the equally eminent Robert Trent Jones. On top of that, the ubiquitous Peter Alliss was the professional here for a number of years.
There are three loops of nine holes, the combinations of which make up the three 18 hole courses: The Lakes, Blackmoor and High. Possibly the best hole is hole 1, which you would face on the Lakes and the High courses. At 448 yards there is no easy way into your round, so you’d better have been to the range first! The drive needs to be steered down the left before an approach over a ravine and dyke to a well-guarded green on two levels. The High course is regarded as the toughest with a standard scratch of 74 against a par of 72. Nevertheless, all three are excellent layouts, which will test even the best players.
