Founded in 1923 Moor Allerton Golf Club's original 18-hole course was designed by Dr Alistair McKenzie who went on to create Augusta National, home of The (US) Masters. The first professional was S Trapp - a one-time assistant to the great Harry Vardon - and his initial salary was recorded at £2 a week.
The Club's foundation arose from sectarian intolerance, but to their credit the Jewish founders of the Club adopted an open door policy regardless of religion.

By the mid 1960's the Club was "bursting at the seams" and it took a great deal of courage and foresight for the then committee to decide to move and create 27-holes of championship golf a few miles away on the edge of the village of Wike. Robert Trent Jones Sr. was commissioned to design his first course in Britain utilising 220 acres of picturesque and undulating Yorkshire countryside. He was able to create three excellent loops of nine-holes, which opened for play in 1971. Such was its design and quality that it was short-listed to hold the Ryder Cup in 1977.
Peter Alliss spent some years as the Club Professional in the early 70's. Peter had a magnificent golfing pedigree winning many major tournaments as well as appearing in 8 Ryder Cups. He now is a famous author, golf architect and TV commentator. He is still an honorary member of the Club and a frequent visitor.

By 1982 Moor Allerton had become the venue for the Car Care Plan Tournament on the European PGA Tour. Among the leading stars who played were Seve Ballesteros, Bob Charles, Nick Faldo, Sandy Lyle, Greg Norman, Nick Price, Tony Jacklin and Ian Woosnam.
Howard Clark, the Club Tournament Professional, had become firmly established as one of England's finest golfers. His career included 12 European Victories and 6 Ryder Cups and he is now a leading golf television commentator.
Although a magnificent course the Club has always looked at ways to improve it further. Hence in the last few years substantial sums of money have been spent planting over 20000 trees to add further definition to the course, as well as minor design modifications, supervised by Peter Alliss, to improve playability.
